Optimisation and Rationalisation of Cattle Immunisation against Theileria parva in Eastern Zambia
نویسنده
چکیده
The most serious constraint of cattle rearing in Eastern Zambia has been East Coast Fever (ECF), and acute and often lethal tick-borne disease caused by the protozoan Theileria parva. A method of immunisation known as “infection and treatment” was developed in the seventies and has, so far, been the only efficient and available immunoprophylactic control method. It is done by inoculating cattle with a stabilate of live T. parva sporozoites isolated from infected ticks, simultaneously to an injection of long-acting tetracycline. The method is based on the observation that animals recovering from ECF develop a strong immunity against subsequent homologous challenges. Unlike tick control, it needs to be applied only once in an animal’s life span and, unlike chemotherapy, it is administered without emergency, in an organised manner.

Whole-Genome Sequencing of Theileria parva Strains Provides Insight into Parasite Migration and Diversification in the African Continent
The disease caused by the apicomplexan protozoan parasite Theileria parva, known as East Coast fever or Corridor disease, is one of the most serious cattle diseases in Eastern, Central, and Southern Africa. We performed whole-genome sequencing of nine T. parva strains, including one of the vaccine strains (Kiambu 5), field isolates from Zambia, Uganda, Tanzania, or Rwanda, and two buffalo-deriv...

In an attempt to characterize Theileria parva parasites circulating in South Sudan cattle , polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based assays were carried out using four single copy encoding antigen genes p104, PIM, p150 and p67 in addition to one microsatellite MS321. A total of 20 bovine DNA samples from two locations in South Sudan were included in this study, in addition to two references stra...

Integrative management of wildlife and livestock requires a clear understanding of the diseases transmitted between the two populations. The tick-borne protozoan parasite Theileria parva causes two distinct diseases in cattle, East Coast fever and Corridor disease, following infection with parasites derived from cattle or buffalo, respectively. In this study, cattle were immunized with a live s...

We screened cattle and goats from the districts of Chama, Monze and Mumbwa in Zambia for animal African trypanosomes, Babesia bigemina and Theileria parva using PCRs; 38.1% of the samples tested positive for at least one of the parasite species. The most common parasite was Trypanosoma vivax (19.8%). Its incidence was significantly higher in goats than in cattle, (P<0.05). B. bigemina was found...
متن کاملTheileria parva: the nature of the immune response and its significance for immunoprophylaxis.
Theileria parva is a tick-borne haemoprotozoan parasite of cattle and buffalo which is responsible for considerable economic losses to cattle farming in Eastern, Central and Southern Africa. Infection with the parasite results in an acute lymphoproliferative disorder with high mortality, but animals which survive infection are solidly immune to homologous challenge. Such immunity can be reprodu...
